Uganda's gorilla trekking takes place in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Bwindi is the country's primary gorilla destination and is divided into four main trekking sectors: Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga and Nkuringo. Trekking can take roughly 2–7 hours, with one hour of observation once the gorilla family is located.
THE SIGNATURE EXPERIENCE DAY 01 — INTO THE FOREST Kampala / Entebbe → Bwindi Begin the journey south-west through Uganda's changing landscapes. The city gradually gives way to countryside, rolling hills and eventually the dramatic highlands of south-western Uganda. Arrive at your lodge overlooking the forest. The evening is intentionally slow. Forest. Mist. Mountains. Silence. Prepare for tomorrow's trek with your guide. Overnight — Bwindi
DAY 02 — THE ENCOUNTER Gorilla Trekking This is the heart of the journey. After an early breakfast, head to your designated trekking sector and meet your ranger guides. Then you enter the forest. There is no fixed route. The gorillas move through their natural habitat, and the trekking team follows their location that day. UWA allocates visitors to gorilla families according to the designated entry point and the day's tracking arrangements. The forest gets deeper. The trail gets steeper. And then, somewhere ahead, you hear movement. Branches breaking. Leaves rustling. Your guide signals you to stop. And suddenly... there they are. A silverback. A mother. A young gorilla playing in the vegetation. For one extraordinary hour, you simply observe them in their natural environment. No performance. No enclosure. Just the forest and its giants. DAY 03 — BEYOND THE GORILLAS The experience shouldn't end when the trek does. Today explores the world surrounding the gorillas. Depending on the traveller's interests, choose from: The Forest Walk Discover Bwindi's extraordinary plant life, birds and smaller forest species. The Community Experience Spend time with communities surrounding the forest and learn how conservation and tourism intersect with everyday life. The Batwa Forest Experience An opportunity to learn about the Batwa's historical relationship with the forest. UWA lists the Batwa Forest Experience among the activities available in Bwindi. The Highlands Take a scenic drive through the hills and valleys surrounding Bwindi. This day gives the traveller time to understand that the gorillas are part of a much larger living ecosystem. Overnight — Bwindi
DAY 04 — LEAVING THE WILD Wake to your final morning among the hills. Breakfast. A final view of the forest. Then begin the journey back towards Kampala or Entebbe. For travellers flying, Bwindi's southern sectors can be accessed via Kisoro Airstrip, while the northern side is served by Kihihi Airstrip. The forest disappears behind you. But the encounter stays. Journey ends.
